San Ramon Parks and Community Services Commission Unveils $1.8 Million Central Park Sports Turf and Lighting Overhaul
Synthetic turf upgrades, drought-resilient landscaping, and glare-reducing LED sports lighting will expand evening youth athletic leagues beginning next spring.

The San Ramon Parks and Community Services Commission unveiled comprehensive design plans on Monday for a $1.8 million field renovation project across the multi-use sports complex at San Ramon Central Park. Approved by the City Council as part of the five-year capital improvement plan, the project will replace aging organic turf on two primary competition fields with next-generation organic infill synthetic turf, install dark-sky certified LED stadium lighting, and construct shaded spectator pavilions along Alcosta Boulevard.
Parks and Community Services Director Kathi Heimburger presented the architectural specifications during a Monday study session, highlighting that the modern synthetic turf surface requires zero municipal potable water and eliminates pesticide runoff into nearby San Ramon Creek. The upgraded high-efficiency LED lighting fixtures will reduce electrical energy consumption by 42 percent while concentrating illumination directly onto playing boundaries, dramatically minimizing light spillover into adjacent residential neighborhoods.
Youth soccer, baseball, and lacrosse league directors across the San Ramon Valley enthusiastically endorsed the project. Local athletic leagues have historically struggled with field cancellations during winter rain storms, and the synthetic all-weather drainage design will allow an estimated 4,500 youth athletes to practice and compete safely year-round. Construction is scheduled to commence in early December, with city engineers scheduling phased field closures to preserve public park access for casual walkers and dog park visitors.
Residents, parents, and league representatives can review detailed field construction diagrams, environmental impact assessments, and temporary practice relocation schedules online at sanramon.ca.gov. Field reservation questions and league coordination inquiries may also be directed to the San Ramon Parks and Community Services Department Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM at (925) 973-3200. The renovated sports fields are scheduled to host their first official league tournaments in April 2027.
